In Haryana, get a bride for Rs 1,000 from Bihar

CHANDIGARH: Haryana, reeling under a skewed sex ratio, is faced with yet another startling fact – an NGO has found that girls are being "bought" and brought to Haryana from 20 states across the country. The state's sex ratio stands at 837 in the 0-6 years age group, its lowest in the last five years and second only to Punjab.

In one case, the family of a girl from Bihar was paid just Rs 1,000.

In its report released in Pune on Saturday, the NGO, Drishti Stree Adhyayan Prabodhan Kendra, has found that most of the girls were brought from West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Assam. It's findings also indicate that girls were bought within the state too.

The NGO surveyed 10,190 households in Haryana and found 318 women who were bought and married off to men in Haryana. The NGO has shared the findings with the Haryana government.

Among these 318 women, 145 are from different parts of Haryana, followed by West Bengal (43), Bihar (27), Andhra Pradesh (17), Assam (15), Uttar Pradesh (14), Himachal Pradesh (11) and Rajasthan (10). Women have been brought from other states too, including even prosperous states like Gujarat.

The NGO has covered a population of 56,520 in 92 villages of five districts -- Sonipat, Karnal, Mahendragarh, Sirsa and Mewat. The study was conducted to ascertain whether the brides came from other states and if a price was paid to get them to Haryana.

The NGO found that in number of cases, men had to buy their wives despite the fact that dowry system is prevalent in Jatland.

The report says whenever respondents were asked about money being paid for brides, the women chose to be silent. Only 15 women out of 318 reported that money was paid to their families. The amount varied between Rs 10,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh.

"This may not be a big amount but these girls come from poor families and this could be luring parents to give away their daughters, despite the girls going to faraway lands and having to adjust into alien culture," the report said.

India has more Cellphones than toilets

India has 545 million working cell phones thanks to its booming emerging economy, a number expected to reach 1 billion by 2015, the UN University said Wednesday.
That number exceeds the number of people who have access to toilet or sanitation facilities - only about 366 million, or 31 percent of the 1-billion strong population.
India's number of cell phone users soared in just 10 years, from 0.35 per 100 persons in 2000 to 45 per 100 persons this year.
Worldwide, an estimated 1.1 billion people of the world population of 6.7 billion people have no access to toilet facilities. The UN Millennium Development Goals call for access to toilets by all people by 2025,
The UN University, a Canada-based think tank, made a study on cell phone users in developing countries to demonstrate that some countries may lag behind in achieving the goal of providing toilets and sanitation for all the world population by 2025.
'It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet,' said Zafar Adeel, a director at the UN University.
UN University said it would cost an estimated 358 billion dollars to build toilets for half the world population between now and 2015. Each toilet costs 300 dollars.
The World Health Organisation and the UN Children's Fund said programmes to provide toilets have fallen behind schedule worldwide and the 2015 goal may not be reached.

Shivalak Raj, a teacher at the school told Hindustan Times, "One Saturday evening I saw some local youths drinking liquor in one of the classrooms. I objected to it and told them to leave the school.

" Another teacher, Varun Kumar Chaudhary, added, "The boys attacked me when I went to help Raj." Several students of the school have also confirmed that they have seen the youths drinking in the classrooms in the evenings.
One student even brought the beer cans the miscreants had left behind. School Principal Chhote Lal Sharma said, "Several times in the past given I have complaint about anti-social elements roaming on school campus in the evenings and the watchman's inability to check them.
" "The school gate is broken for over six months and the boundary wall at the back is also damaged. There is no check on entry of outsiders into the school premises," he added.

Pre-Marital Sex: Rural Youth More Active

New Delhi: Rural youth have more pre-marital sex than their urban counterparts. The less educated are more likely to cast their vote and India's youth is ill-prepared for employment in a globalized economy. It is information like this that the government hopes will help it understand the 'vulnerability' facing the nation's youth.

In a first of its kind study, researchers and policy makers have tracked key phases in a person's life, especially concerning health, marriage, civic participation, pre-marital sexual activity and work force participation. The consolidated data of the study -- conducted in six states -- will be launched by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Youth in India: Situation and Needs is the first `sub-nationally representative' study undertaken by the government to track key transitions experienced by young people in six states in India. The study was conducted in 2006-07, with the sample size ranging from 10,002 in Rajasthan to 7,996 in Tamil Nadu.
The objectives of this project are to provide evidence at the state level on the magnitude and patterns of sexual and reproductive practices in and outside of marriage. The exercise is aimed at giving more knowledge about decision-making practices and attitudes amongst the youth.
Lastly, helping the policy makers understand key factors underlying the sexual and reproductive health, knowledge, attitudes and life choices of young people thereby enabling them to make policies with lesser margin for error.
The study has been undertaken by the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai and the Population Council, New Delhi. The project aims to in- crease the government's investment in youth centric issues and was conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

Pune sells porn worth Rs 30 lakh a year

City accounts for 50 per cent of revenue generated in Maharashtra porn market

Soft porn continues to find viewers in Pune despite the economic slowdown with the city generating 50 per cent of the Rs 60-lakh-a-year soft porn film market in Maharashtra. Distributors of soft porn say Pune made Rs 30 lakh from soft porn in 2009. While there were eight theatres that screened soft porn in the 1980s, there are only two that showcase the fare today Shrikrishna and Alpana. The two nevertheless attract enough business to make Pune the capital of soft porn in the state.

In Pune, about 100 such films release every year. Each film runs for a week. Both Shrikrishna and Alpana run six to seven shows a day. Tickets are priced at Rs 30 and Rs 35.

"Most members of our audience are 35 to 40 years of age. They drive cars and are from respectable backgrounds. Surprisingly, we have very few young viewers. The young seek their thrills online," said Shantaram Thorat, manager, Alpana theatre.

Ulhas Manne, manager Shrikrishna, said, "Most porn films are from the South in Telugu and Malayalam. "The films are dubbed in Hindi. This is a legal business as all these films are censored."
